Ryan studied law and economics at the University of Sydney. He spent a year as associate to the Honourable Justice Steven Rares of the Federal Court of Australia, who oversaw the Court’s Admiralty & Maritime list, and from 2019 was a solicitor in the shipping department of a major Australian law firm. Ryan joined MFB in 2022.

He is qualified in both England & Wales and Australia.

Ryan advises on all aspects of shipping and trade law. He has acted for shipowners, charterers and commodity traders in London arbitrations including unsafe port claims, late redelivery damages, demurrage and laytime and sale of goods disputes. He acted for the successful respondents in Rhine Shipping DMCC v Vitol SA at first instance and in the Court of Appeal, a case which concerned load port delays to the VLCC ‘Dijilah’ and quantification of damages in the oil trading industry.

Ryan also advises on non-contentious matters. He has assisted clients negotiating and drafting vessel sharing agreements, voyage and time charterparties, transhipment agreements and the standard terms of a large European-headquartered trading house.
